Fictional writings

Abridged definitions of some alterhuman-related terms I use a lot.

Alterhuman:
A collective term for those whose identities differ from the common/traditional idea of humanity. Alterhumans may or may not identify as nonhuman. Can include therians, otherkin, other/animal-hearted, furries, etc.

Animal-hearted:
Feeling a strong relation/connection to and identifying with another animal.

Awakening:
The realisation that one is a therian/nonhuman.

Hearttype:
The beings/species someone who is animal-hearted identifies with.

Kintype:
The being/s an otherkin identifies as.

Noema:
(Plural: Noemata)
Inherent knowledge about one's therio/kintype, regardless of origin (be it explained through psychology, spirituality, both or neither). Includes memories, appearance, habits, environment, etc.

Otherkin:
Those who identify as partially or entirely nonhuman on a fundamental level.

Polytherian:
A therian with multiple theriotypes.

Shifting:
A common phenomenon experienced by those with nonhuman identities. Shifts are changes in one's mental state or perception of self from human to nonhuman, or from one nonhuman state to another.Common types of shifts:

  • Phantom shift: Experiencing phantom supernumerary limbs or physical traits of one's kin/theriotype, such as a tail, wings, whiskers, different physiology, etc.

  • Mental shift: Shifting into the mental state of one's kin/theriotype. Can affect thought patterns, perception of the environment, behaviour, vocalisations, etc.

  • Cameo shift: Any type of shift of a creature that isn't one's therio/kintype.

  • Dream shift: Becoming (or being) one's therio/kintype in a dream.

Therian:
Short for therianthrope. Someone who experiences/believes themselves to be another (animal) species on a fundamental, personal level.

Theriotype:
The animal/species a therian identifies as.
